Garage Door Remote Not Working? Fix It Before You Call
Quick answer: If your remote stopped working but the wall button still opens the door, start with a fresh battery (the LED can light while the transmitter is too weak), then reprogram the remote to the opener. If neither remote nor keypad works but the wall button does, the logic-board receiver may be fried, common after a Houston summer power surge.
Step 1: battery and reprogramming
Swap in a fresh CR2032 or 9V even if the LED still lights, because the transmitter chip needs more voltage than the LED does. If a new battery does not fix it, reprogram: most LiftMaster and Chamberlain units have a Learn button on the opener head, Genie uses Aladdin Connect or a Learn button. Press Learn, then press the remote within 30 seconds.
Keypads reprogram the same way. If you forgot the keypad PIN, you can reset it from the Learn button and set a new one.
Step 2: rule out range and interference
LED bulbs in the opener and nearby can flood the receiver with radio noise and cut remote range, a surprisingly common cause. Swap to a CFL or an LED rated as garage-door-opener-safe. Also confirm the antenna wire hanging from the opener head is intact and not tucked up into the housing.
Step 3: when it is the opener
If the wall button works but no remote or keypad will pair after a battery swap and reprogram, the receiver chip on the logic board is likely fried, often from a Houston summer power surge. That is a board-level repair, $200 to $300 on a healthy unit. Very old Security+ 1.0 openers also will not accept modern remotes and need a board upgrade.
Frequently asked
Why does my wall button work but not the remote?
The remote signal is not reaching the opener: usually a weak battery, a remote that needs reprogramming, or a fried receiver chip on the logic board. Work through battery and reprogramming first.
How do I reprogram my garage door remote?
Press the Learn button on the opener head, then press the remote button within about 30 seconds until the opener light blinks or clicks. Genie units may use the Aladdin Connect app.
Can LED lights interfere with my remote?
Yes. Cheap LED bulbs emit radio noise that cuts remote range. Switch to a CFL or an LED labeled garage-door-opener-compatible.
My remote is 12 years old and nothing works. Why?
Older Security+ 1.0 openers do not accept modern Security+ 2.0 remotes. The fix is a logic board upgrade, which we stock, rather than just a new remote.
What does a board repair cost?
Around $200 to $300 on a healthy opener. We quote replacement as an alternative on older units.
